Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Iceland. It is situated in the south-east of the island, covering more than 8% of the country. With its size of 8,456 km² it is also the largest glacier in Europe. The thickness of the ice is up to 1000 meters. Icelands highest mountain, Hvannadalshnjúkur, is found in the southern perifery of Vatnajökull, near Skaftafell National Park. Under the glacier - as under many of the glaciers of Iceland - there are volcanoes. The volcanic lakes, Grimsvötn for example, were the sources of a large glacier run in 1996. The volcano under these lakes also caused a considerable but short-time eruption in the beginning of November, 2004. The Vatnajökull has been shrinking for some years now, possibly because of climatic changes & recent volcanic activity.

This hotel is located in the countryside just outside the little port of Hofn on the main ringroad round Iceland. The rooms are modern, but cosy and welcoming. They are in very good condition, as are the bathrooms with warm, dark red decor and comfortable modern furniture. The restaurant is modern and serves delicious Icelandic specialities. This is a small, modern white building. The lobby is small, but there is plenty of seating space in the adjacent restaurant/bar. An excellent choice from which to explore Iceland's ruggedly beautiful southern coast, this is also one of the closest hotels to the famous Iceberg lagoon Jokulsarlon.
